Duration
The duration of the dental implant placement procedure can vary depending on the number of implants and the complexity of the case. Generally, it can take a few hours to several months to complete the entire process, including the healing period.
Anaesthesia
During dental implant placement, different anesthesia options can be offered, such as: - Local anesthesia - Conscious sedation - General anesthesia
Convalescence
Swelling of the gums may occur for a few days after the placement of one or more dental implants. Sutures may be used to close the gums, and in most cases, the sutures are absorbable. Return to work can be done as early as the day after the procedure.
Results
Dental implants have a high success rate, typically exceeding 95%. However, like any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with it, such as infection, temporary discomfort, bleeding, and the possibility of implant failure. It is essential to follow post-operative instructions and maintain good oral hygiene to maximize the chances of success and reduce risks. Tobacco use is generally recognized as a risk factor for actual implant failure.

How Dental Implants Work

A dental implant is a titanium or zirconia screw inserted into your upper or lower jawbone, taking the place of a missing tooth root. Once in position, bone grows around the implant in a process called osseointegration—your body treats the titanium as part of itself rather than a foreign object. After healing, an abutment connects the implant to a crown, bridge or denture, giving you a stable, natural-looking tooth.

The Two-Stage Process

Most patients make two trips. The first visit lasts two to four days and covers your scan, surgical planning and implant placement. You then return home while the bone heals—typically three to six months, though your dentist will confirm the exact timeline. Some straightforward cases allow immediate loading, where a temporary crown is fitted the same week.

Second Visit: Abutment and Crown

Once osseointegration is complete, you travel back for five to eight working days. The abutment is attached, impressions are taken, and your final crown is fabricated in zirconia, e.max or ceramic-metal. The number of teeth and the material you choose will determine how long this stage takes.

Implant Brands You Will Encounter

Clinics stock internationally recognized systems including Nobel Biocare, Straumann, Alpha Bio, Zimmer, Dio and ICX. Ask which brand your dentist uses and whether replacement parts are available in your home country—long-term service matters as much as the surgery itself.

Where Patients Travel for Implants

Turkey, Hungary, Croatia, Albania, Romania and Thailand attract patients seeking experienced practitioners and modern facilities at lower cost. Each country offers accredited clinics, English-speaking teams and straightforward logistics, but standards vary—research each practice's certifications, patient reviews and aftercare policies before booking.
